Inferno | "Infection" | 02/2008

Jos lähdetään siitä, että mieleen kipuavat Pestilencen jazz-aika, 2000-luvun iskevimmän pään ruotsimetalli, arcturusmainen maalailu, Pink Floydin herkkyys ja System of A Downin sekopäisyys ja kaikki tämä jo ensimmäisen biisin puoliväliin mennessä, niin onko kyse jo ylisanoista? Varmaan, mutta tämän sortin matematiikkamusiikkia ja tyylien sinkoilua ei voi kuuntelijalle juuri helpommaksi tehdä. Johdonmukaisuuksia on ajoittain vaikea löytää, mutta punainen lanka jatkuvasti mainiosti hyppysissä. Loppua kohden meininki hivenen normalisoituu, mikä toisaalta on pettymyskin, mutta kun biisien taso ja monikerroksisuus säilytetään, niin eipä hätiä mitiä. Turha tätä on selitellä, tämä pitää kuulla.

Starting with the flashbacks of Pestilence’s jazzy season, the most striking Swedish metal of the 21st century, Arcturus’ melodiousness, delicacy of Pink Floyd and the madness Of System of A Down, and all this by the half way of the first song. So is this an overstatement? Probably, but for the listener you cannot do it any easier to listen this kind of mathematical metal and bouncing of different styles. There is a little problem finding consistency every now and then, but the main idea is clearly in the band’s tight possession. In the end the spirit of happening normalizes a bit, which on the other hand is a disappointment, but when the high level and multiple layers of songs are maintained it is all fine. No use of explaining this, you have to hear this yourself.

Jes! Satunnainen takatukka, tuo kotimainen tekniikkahevin messias ja Allahin parta polkaisi ulos uuden EP:n, joka näyttää maailmalle, miten sitä hevimusiikkia pitäisi tehdä. Genrerajoja harppauksin ylittävä orkesteri kuulostaa todellisen omaperäiseltä ja on virkistävä tuulahdus crossover-metalliin.

Tuoreen EP:n kappalemateriaali on samanaikaisesti koukuttavaa että hämmentävää. Trashaavista ryntäyksistä siirrytään pehmeästi progeileviin B-osiin sujuvasti ja ilman mitään väkinäisyyttä. Bändin orkestraatio ja uskomattoman hienot sovitukset saavat kimurantit biisit kuulostamaan helposti lähestyttäviltä.

Vokalistiakseli Järvinen-Ylinärä jakaa lauluosuudet uskomattoman hienosti örinä/karjuminen- ja kliiniosuuksiin kuulostamatta silti perinteiseltä hittiheviosaston kamalta. Ja helvetti, jos bändissä on alttofonia soittava orkestroija/sovittaja, niin voiko bändi olla huono? Fonisti Henri Heikan päätähuimaavat pyrähdykset tuovat mieleen ajoittain John Zornin, joka ainakin allekirjoittaneen silmissä on suunnaton plussa.

Ongelmana Infection-EP:ssä on se, että biisejä on mahdoton kuunnella yksitellen tai laittaa paremmuusjärjestykseen. Bändin kokonaissaundi on samanaikaisesti kepeä, mahtipontinen, raskas, kulmikas, selkeä, brutaali ja kaunis. Kunniamaininta menkööt kappaleiden Waters of shame ja penetration uskomattoman hienolle kitaratyöskentelylle ja orkestraatiolle. Puhtaitten laulumelodioiden käsittely on myös maailmanluokkaa, sillä selvästi bändi ei ole mennyt siitä mistä aita on matalin.

Yksinkertaisesti tiivistettynä:

Random Mulletin musiikki luo uusia uria tömän päivän Dillinger Escape Plan- ja Meshuggah-kopioiden tylsään virtaan. Bändi on luonut oman, ihailtavan persoonallisen tyylin luoda musiikkia, joka saa niskakarvat nousemaan pystyyn väkisin. Jokainen aggressiivisesta, kimurantimmasta musiikista kiinnostunut luovikoon webbiselaimensa välittömästi Mulletin sivuille ja ottakoon biisimateriaalin mp3-soittimeen. Random Mullet on parasta, mitä suomalaiselle musiikille on tapahtunut pitkään aikaan. Tässä bändissä ei yksinkertaisesti ole MITÄÄN huonoa.

Yeah! Random Mullet, the Messiah and the Allah's beard of the Finnish technical metal genre has put out a new EP, which shows the world how heavy metal should be done. Leaping over the boundaries of genres, the band sounds truly original and is a refreshing breeze to crossover-metal.

The material on the new EP are simultaneously addictive and confusing. The music moves from thrashing to softly progressive B-parts fluently and without any artificiality. The orchestration of the band and the unbelievably fine arrangements make the complex songs sound accessible.

The vocalists Järvinen and Ylinärä split the vocal parts to growling and clean vocals amazingly well, and without sounding like the traditional hit metal stuff. And for fuck?s sake, can a band suck if there is an alto saxophone playing orchestrator/arranger? The frisky dashes of saxophonist Henri Heikka occasionally remind me of John Zorn and to me that is a huge bonus.

The problem of Infection-EP is that the songs are impossible to listen one piece at a time and to put into a rank order. The overall sound of the group is simultaneously light, pompous, heavy, edgy, clear, brutal and beautiful. The distinction shall go to the incredibly magnificent guitar work and orchestration on the songs Waters of shame and Penetrated skin. The handling of the clean vocals is also world class as the band obviously hasn?t used the easy way out.

To sum up:

Random Mullet's music creates new paths to the dull stream of modern day Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah copycats. The band has developed its own admirably personal style to make music that forces you to have goose bumps. Everyone who?s interested in aggressive, complex music should tack their web browsers to randommullet.com and put the songs into their Mp3-players. Random Mullet is the best thing that has happened to Finnish music in a long time. There simply are not ANY bad things to say about this group.

Nimihän ei bändiä pahenna, varsinkaan jos bändi tarjoaa tällaista jälkeä jo toisella demollaan. Oululaisen bändin anti on tyrmäävää, koukeroista ja progressiivista, muttei kuitenkaan itsetarkoituksellista nippelimetallia, jota ymmärtääkseen tarvitsee laskukoneen. Saatekirjeessään peräti seitsemänhenkinen poppoo kertoo, että demon biisejä hierottiin parisen vuotta. Tavoitteena oli, että Infection jää viimeiseksi omakustanteeksi. En ihmettelisi, vaikka näin todella kävisi. Ovathan esimerkiksi Stam1na ja System Of A Down nousseet kaikkien huulille, vaikka ovat vaikeammin lähestyttävää musiikkia. Random Mulletissa on kaiken lisäksi tallella uutuudenviehätys, jonka mainitut nimet ovat jo kadottaneet. Mielenkiintoista olisi nähdä, kuinka pitkälle näillä eväillä päästään.

Kaikille lienee päivänselvää, että bändin soittajat ovat melkoisia virtuooseja, mutta on erityisen ilahduttavaa, että kaikille pelimanneille on annettu hyvin tilaa myös sovituksellisesti. Perinteisten instrumenttien lisäksi myös saksofoni puhaltaa ilmaa omaperäisyyden liekkiin. Useinhan tällaiset kokeilut kaatuvat turhaan huomionhakuun, mutta Random Mulletilla homma toimii säästeliäästi käytettynä. Viisi biisiä ja puoli tuntia ovat melkoinen pala purtavaksi, mutta kun Random Mulletille antaa aikaa, se avautuu hyvin. Ja tiedoksi niille, joille progressiivinen metalli tarkoittaa muniinpuhaltelua: tämän demon tarjonta on paikoin hyvinkin aggressiivista. Repertuaarista löytyy niin puhdasta laulua kuin örinääkin. Kun vielä sounditkin ovat ammattimaisella tasolla, ei voi kuin povata hyvää jatkoa tälle yllättäjälle.

Nomen is not omen, especially if a band serves this kind of content on their second demo. Music of the band is stunning, crooked, technical progressive metal which still keeps itself hell out of the self-purposed you-need-a-calculator-to-understand-this -metal. In the covering letter big, seven-member group tells that they worked on the songs for two years, aiming Infection to be their last self-produced recording. I would not be surprised, if it holds true. For example, bands like Stam1na and S.O.A.D. have made it to the awareness of the masses even they are a bit hard to approach. To add, Random Mullet has that pinch of novelty that aforementioned groups have lost. It would be interesting to see, how far the band can get with these attributes.

It is probably obvious to all that these musicians are quite of virtuosos, but it is especially pleasing to hear the arrangement space given to each one of them. In addition to the traditional instruments, there is also a saxophone blowing oxygen in the flame of originality. Usually experiments like this do fall into oblivion because of excessive ambition, but in the case of Random Mullet it works while used in small amounts at the time. Five songs and a half an hour are tough to chew at first, but when you give Random Mullet some time the record will open itself for you. As an announcement for those who think progressive metal means blowing to the balls: this demo is occasionally very aggressive. There are clean vocals, but there are some serious growls too. And because the sounds are great too, all I can do is foretell a great future for this surprising act.

Oululaisbändi vyöryttää melkoisen tyylisuuntien ilotulituksen niskaan. Bändi on erittäin tekninen ja taitava. Välillä genrejen välisiä tuulahduksia käydään nuuskimassa jopa jazzin puolelta, ja mausteen omaisena säväyksenä se jopa toimii. RM:n biisit kuulostavat suurilta ja yhtye on säveltänyt erittäin hienoja melodioita. Erityisesti laulajat ansaitsevat kiitoksensa, sillä sekä örinäosasto ja puhdas laulu kuulostaa väkevältä ja vahvalta. RM:lla on lisäksi omaperäinen tapa tehdä musiikkia, joka ei nyt ehkä aivan lähde uusille reiteille, mutta tarjoilee sopivasti erilaisia näkemyksiä valtavirran vaihtoehdoksi.

"I already know them" sounds fellow Korhonen as the disk from Random Mullet arrives. But why always give the good stuff away, just because the mighty Mister already worked for Noise.fi? So, I grabbed the piece and mine it was. Random Mullet is another good example, that Oulu is not dead. In fact, "Infection" is the second demo of a band proving that musical genres are nowadays not that easy to separate and therefore allow incredible constellations and combinations, which lost their bizarreness, but bubble with endless possibilities.

Random Mullet apparently chose the title of their five track EP deliberately - "Infection" is the agenda. As we all know, an infection drags on for several days without you noticing that it already hit you. With "The Statement" Random Mullet beat you up with Modern Metal and nice growls, but soon the clean vocals of Ilmo Ylinärä set in and in the background it tinkles seductively classical and reminds me of that one song from Kamelot. This mixture of changing tempos and sounds is truly a statement the guys make, but still you continue "just listening". "Penetrated Skin" would probably describe that status best, when you yourself notice the first signs of change. There is something. What could that be? Maybe awesome riffs and an even better hook line, which sticks into your mind like bumps pop out of your skin. Slowly your body is reacting towards the switch and the poison is running through your veins, embodied as the "Waters of Shame". The interaction growls/clean vocals works perfectly for Random Mullet, as if the guys created the two-vocal-system themselves. The saxophone carves its way like a snake directly into the center of all functions and before you can question any awkwardness growler Simo Järvinen bangs his rage into your face. And now you know, there's no way out, there's no way in - "Infection" took the lead and Random Mullet scored. And while you're feverish, saxophone and guitar solos break your inner silence and make your body give in. Yes, this music is a knock-out, without getting out of its own line. "Neverending Nightmare" marks the last song and tumbles you deep down below. You confess - you're simply too weak to fight back. The slower, but still powerful track is drifting and proudly, like a king fighting his last battle. The last two minutes pass far too fast and tear you into a vortex and you give in to your fate...

In this case your destiny tells you to nourish and cherish Random Mullet or simply to play the stuff again. Despite many progressive influences, alternative insertions and the fact, that I can't really find a band to compare them to, "Infection" is complete, rounded and harmonious. The opposites growls/clean vocals and Heavy/Classic sound like they're closer than you ever thought. With their relatively young age the production sounds tip-top - reasonable, that the guys intend "Infection" to be their last demo. Who embodies so much freshness and dash should indeed release further outputs via a record label. Why I haven't heard of Random Mullet before? In future this question should be unnecessary for fans of good music... Those sounds make reverence rise.

What the #*$% is this? Pain Of Salvation playing Dillinger Escape Plan covers? A side project of Savatage and Meshuggah members? Candy Dulfer does metal? Oh wait, it is a new band from Finland, that explains it!

Random Mullet consists of seven young knaves who prove on their second demo 'Infection' that there is still al lot of musical paths to be trodden in the equilibrium of progressive, symphonic and extreme metal. With the help of an enormous portion of musical innovation, screams, grunts and alto-sax Random Mullet is angling for a record deal, which should not be long if I had a say in it. What a refreshing half hour of unbelievable but true musical meshes that never sound inaccessible (after all, these guys are Finnish). 'Infection' can be obtained in its entirety on their homepage. Melkein päivälleen kaksi vuotta on kulunut siitä, kun Random Mulletin edellinen demo oli arvioitavanani. Suurimman osan tästä kuluneesta kahdesta vuodesta oululainen orkesteri on työstänyt uutta kiekkoaan, joten ei ole tavallaan mikään ihme, että ainakin tällä hetkellä herrat ilmoittavat Infectionin jäävän viimeiseksi demokseen.

Verta, hikeä ja kyyneliä vaatinut äänite jatkaa melko tarkalleen siitä mihin Lifeless kaksi vuotta sitten jäi, eli äärimetallista jazziin asti kurottuva metallisekoitus on tälläkin kerralla reseptin lopputulos. Mitään uutta sekoitteeseen ei ole periaatteessa lisätty, mutta monien pienten mutta sitäkin tärkeämpien parannusten ansiosta, lääke tehoaa nyt ennennäkemättömällä voimalla. Toivoa sopiikin, ettei bändin ura katkea tähän, sillä Infection huokuu jotain uutta ja erilaista, minkä soisi saavan vielä mahdollisuutensa.

Almost exactly two years has passed since Random Mullet's previous demo was reviewed by me. Most of this time the band has worked on their new CD, so it's really not a miracle, that the band declares Infection to be their last demo.

The recording continues where Lifeless left two years ago, meaning a mixture featuring everything from extreme metal to jazz is recipe's outcome again. Basically nothing new has been added, but because of many little improvements, the drug effects with unforeseen power. Here's to hoping that the band's career isn't over yet for Infection is something different and new, which should have its chance.
